Take off electrically: The new Audi A5 plug-in hybrid models Avant and Sedan

Published 26 March 2025

The new Audi A5 e-hybrid quattro combines sporty performance with modern efficiency and sets new standards in the mid-size class. For the first time, Audi is offering the A5 as a plug-in hybrid in two models – Avant and Sedan – and in two power levels with 220 kW or 270 kW. At the heart of the new models the new generation high-voltage battery is featured, whose capacity has been increased by 45% to 25.9 kWh gross. As a result, the A5 e-hybrid achieves an impressive electric range of up to 110 kilometers. With the new technology designation “e-hybrid”, Audi also promotes the advanced electrification of its plug-in hybrids at first glance.

Happy A5 family growth

With the new A5 e-hybrid model series, Audi is opening the next chapter in the success story of its mid-size cars. The models combine a sharpened design language with state-of-the-art combustion engine technology and an innovative operating concept. Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi, explains the launch of the new A5: “As part of our model initiative, we are significantly expanding our range of plug-in hybrids in 2025. Outputting up to 270 kilowatts, our new generation of plug-in hybrid models offers a sporty and comfortable driving experience as well as a harmonious balance between performance and efficiency.” Thanks to intelligent hybrid management, drivers benefit from maximum efficiency and flexibility. The system automatically selects the optimum operating strategy and dynamically adapts to the respective driving conditions. The priority is to make the daily driving experience as purely electric as possible, as Geoffrey Bouquot, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG, reports: “The increased electric range of our new plug-in hybrids enables our customers to cover the majority of their daily journeys using only electric power. Our hybrid technology combines the best of both worlds and provides a high degree of flexibility for everyday life.” The hybrid assistant also ensures intelligent use of electrical energy: routes with low speeds, such as city traffic or traffic jams, are preferably driven electrically. Precisely adjustable charge level management can be used to ensure that sufficient electrical energy remains available for the last section or journeys without charging facilities. The Audi charging service offers access to numerous AC charging points in 29 European countries, while a Mode 3 charging cable (plug type 2) is included as standard for easy charging at home.

E for advanced efficiency

The high-voltage battery of the Audi A5 e-hybrid quattro is a crucial component of the modern plug-in hybrid drive and has been extensively optimized to improve both electric range and charging performance. With a gross capacity of 25.9 kWh (20.7 kWh net), it offers around 45% more energy than previous generations. Thanks to the innovative cell-to-pack technology, the battery cells are integrated directly into the housing, which enables a higher energy density with a compact design and better use of space. The 17 cell modules also store around 46% more energy than previous models. The charging capacity has also been optimized: The maximum AC charging power is 11 kW, allowing a full charge in just 2.5 hours. In addition, improved recuperation with up to 88 kW energy recovery ensures even more efficient use of the battery capacity. Depending on the driving mode – purely electric (up to 140 km/h) or in hybrid mode – the energy is distributed intelligently. The system automatically calculates the optimum battery usage based on navigation data. A digital slider makes it possible to individually adjust the desired charge level while driving to ensure maximum efficiency with flexible everyday usability. The new Audi A5 e-hybrid quattro relies on the powerful Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) and combines efficiency with impressive performance. The 2.0 TFSI engine with 185 kW (252 PS) is supported by an electric motor with 105 kW at the rear, resulting in a system output of up to 270 kW. In the more powerful version, both the Sedan and the Avant accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 s, while the 220 kW version takes 5.9 s. Regardless of the variant, the top speed is 250 km/h. In addition to its impressive dynamics, the A5 e-hybrid also features more values: weighted fuel consumption is just 2.1 to 2.7 liters per 100 km, while electricity consumption varies between 14.9 and 15.9 kWh/100 km. Thanks to low CO₂ emissions of 45 to 61 g/km, Audi combines environmentally friendly mobility with sporty driving pleasure.
