BMW Concept 7 Protection: a different approach to protected saloons

BMW presents Concept 7 Protection, a study based on the 7 Series that combines targeted ballistic protection with the refinement of a luxury saloon. Using plug-in hybrid technology from the M760e xDrive and discreetly integrated protective features, the manufacturer explores a new approach to protected mobility. A project of interest to customers in Switzerland who value comfort, privacy and security. Concept 7 Protection is designed for private customers, businesses and organisations whose security requirements do not call for the highest protection levels in BMW’s range. Its aim is to preserve the appearance, comfort and driving qualities of a 7 Series while integrating features suited to clearly defined threat scenarios. BMW positions the concept below the protection levels offered by the X5 Protection VR6 and the 7 Series Protection. It should therefore be distinguished from the latter, which offers protection level VR9, with VPAM 10 available as an option. This approach relies on complete vehicle integration: BMW brings together development, production and aftersales support for the entire vehicle.

Plug-in hybrid technology delivering 450 kW and 800 Nm

The concept uses technology from the BMW M760e xDrive. Its plug-in hybrid system combines a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. BMW xDrive all-wheel drive completes the system. For the M760e xDrive’s powertrain, BMW specifies a combined output of 450 kW and maximum torque of 800 Nm. These figures describe the reference technology; the press release provides no acceleration or driving-range measurements specific to the protected concept. The chassis, brakes, powertrain and driver assistance systems are calibrated to account for the additional protective features. BMW consequently aims to deliver a driving experience close to that of the production saloon.

An exclusive cabin and a clearly defined scope of protection

Inside, Smoke White BMW Individual Merino leather, Alcantara trim and an anthracite headlining create a refined atmosphere. Sun protection glazing and electrically operated blinds enhance passenger privacy. In the rear, BMW introduces an Individual console with a foldable table, wireless charging and a cool box. The manufacturer plans to offer this console in 7 Series vehicles during the second half of 2027. Protection combines ballistic glazing, specialised steels and fibre-reinforced composites. According to the press release, the concept complies with the new BayB standard and is designed for selected handgun ammunition, including 9 × 19 mm and .44 Magnum. Blast protection requires a higher scope of protection. An intercom allows occupants to communicate with people outside while keeping the doors and windows closed. An attack alarm system supplements the equipment. The panoramic roof’s sunblind remains permanently closed because of the protective layer integrated beneath the glass.

What could this mean for BMW customers in Switzerland?

For Swiss customers seeking a discreet luxury saloon, Concept 7 Protection highlights the combination of comfort, privacy and targeted protection. Its suitability nevertheless depends on each user’s security requirements. BMW presents the project as an insight into a potential expansion of its Protection portfolio, initially focusing on selected European markets. The press release confirms neither Swiss availability nor a price in CHF. Discover the latest BMW news and explore the world of luxury saloons on LuxuryCars.ch.
