A new open-top sports car and already a collector's item: The Ferrari 296 Speciale A

More racing, more technology

Since 2008, Ferrari has been building driver-oriented Spider models that combine technological advancements with the open-top driving experience. The 296 Speciale A is intended to successfully continue this line. As an open-top version of the 296 GTS, it combines the technical features and design principles of its predecessors – such as the Scuderia 16M, 458 Speciale A, and 488 Pista Spider – with the latest developments from motor racing. The plug-in hybrid drive with 880 PS, the aerodynamic optimization, and the V6 engine with revised acoustic system reflect the focus on performance, efficiency and driving dynamics. The vehicle is based on the technology of the 296 Challenge and uses findings from models such as the 499P and the SF90. The aim is to achieve precise handling combined with high everyday usability. A unique selling point is the use of recycled aluminum in production, which makes Ferrari's production more environmentally friendly and at the same time improves the lightweight construction concept for an even lower vehicle weight. The predecessor models of the 296 Speciale A are among the brand's most sought-after collector's cars today. Against this background, the Speciale A is already considered a hot candidate for the classic cars of tomorrow with high value stability.

The open-top hybrid spider

The Ferrari 296 Speciale A is equipped with an advanced plug-in hybrid system consisting of a 3.0-liter V6 biturbo with 120-degree bank angle engine and an electric motor. The V6 rear-mid engine delivers 700 PS, 37 PS more than in the 296 GTS. The electric motor, positioned between the combustion engine and the optimized 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, contributes a further crisp 180 PS. The combined system output is 880 PS, which is around 50 PS more than the 296 GTS and 160 PS more than the 488 Pista Spider. The maximum torque is 755 Nm at 6,000 rpm and the maximum speed is 8,500 rpm. The electric range is up to 25 kilometers with a limit of 135 km/h, powered by a 7.45 kWh battery. And let's not forget: from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 s, with a top speed of 330 km/h. Various engine components have been redesigned to reduce the rotating masses and the overall weight. The titanium connecting rods, a nitrided steel crankshaft, new pistons, and a newly machined engine block reduce the engine weight by 9 kg, including 2.2 kg for the rotating parts. In combination with carbon fiber body elements, lightweight door panels, special seats and titanium fastening elements, this results in an overall weight reduction of 50 kg compared to the 296 GTS. The dry weight is 1,490 kg, the power-to-weight ratio 1.69 kg/PS: the best value for a Ferrari Berlinetta Spider! The aerodynamics have been extensively revised and now generate a downforce of 435 kilograms at 250 km/h, which corresponds to an increase of 20% compared to the 296 GTS. The aerodynamic measures include an active rear wing with three operating modes (Low Drag, Medium Downforce, High Downforce), vertical fins, a revised diffuser, vortex generators and a CFD-optimized airflow to reduce turbulence in the cockpit area. Aero dampers, inspired by the 296 Challenge, increase stability during load changes. Lighter titanium springs, GT3 dampers and the ABS Evo brake system are used in the suspension. The body is five millimeters lower, which reduces the roll angle by 13%. In combination with specially adapted Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires with a reinforced carcass, this results in more precise handling and a four percent increase in lateral acceleration compared to the 296 GTS.

Open and close in 14 seconds

With so much technology, however, everyday usability should not be neglected – after all, it is all about the fun of open-top driving. The 296 Speciale A is equipped with an electrically retractable hardtop that can be opened or closed in just 14 s (even while driving at low speed). A lowerable vertical glass panel behind the seats allows the engine sound to be heard more intensively if required – especially since it has been optimized. The hardtop features a dark look, which, together with the clear separation between the cockpit and the rear area, emphasizes the so-called “flying bridge” theme. The interior provides a racing-oriented design and uses materials such as Alcantara and exposed carbon fiber. The door panels are minimalist and integrate flat loudspeaker units. A central design element is the exposed gear shift gate, which is reminiscent of classic Ferrari models. Special livery options are available for the exterior paintwork, including Rosso Dino with a choice of longitudinal stripes in white. As an option, the vehicle can be provided with individually selectable start numbers from 00 to 99.
