The new Berlinetta with plug-in hybrid drive and rear-mid engine
Ferrari unveiled its latest top-of-the-range creation in Maranello: the Ferrari 296 Speciale. As a radically sharpened evolution of the 296 GTB, this mid-engined sports car follows in the footsteps of legendary special models such as the Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale, and 488 Pista. The 296 Speciale was specially developed for a very specific target group: Drivers who are not looking for a pure status symbol, but a vehicle that delivers fine driving pleasure, immediate feedback and maximum emotion. The Ferrari 296 Speciale presents itself as an uncompromising car in which drive, dynamics and sound have been raised to a new level. The highlight is the advanced hybrid drive, consisting of a 120° V6 biturbo and an electric motor. Together they deliver a system output of 880 PS (that's 50 PS more than the 296 GTB). The combustion engine alone delivers 700 PS, while the electric motor provides an additional 180 PS in “Extra Boost” mode. The 296 Speciale weighs around 60 kilograms less than its series brother – an advantage that is reflected in the record-breaking power-to-weight ratio of just 1.60 kg per PS, the best value among rear-wheel drive Ferraris. The 296 Speciale also sets new standards in terms of driving dynamics: a 5 mm reduction in ride height and 13% less body roll ensure even more precise cornering. The new ABS Evo system improves braking performance even under the most difficult conditions, while a revised shift strategy ensures even faster gear changes and immediate driving experience. The acoustics have also been retuned to match the increased performance. The engine sound is now more powerful, clearer and more immediate. Ferrari has used twice as many acoustic ducts as in the 296 GTB as well as a targeted emphasis on harmonious cylinder orders – especially the 3rd, 6th and 9th order. In addition, special sound tubes channel the engine’s sound directly into the cockpit and turn every drive into an emotional experience.

4 times driving pleasure – From electric to excessive
The Ferrari 296 Speciale feaures four driving modes, which can be selected via the eManettino on the left-hand side of the steering wheel, and each pursue different strategies for energy distribution and power output. In eDrive mode, the car drives purely electrically with the combustion engine switched off. The range is up to 25 kilometers, with a top speed of 135 km/h which is ideal for urban zones or sound-free journeys. Hybrid mode is active as standard at the start and efficiently controls the use of the electric motor and combustion engine in order to prioritize performance or economy depending on the driving situation. In Performance mode, the combustion engine remains permanently active, while the battery is continuously charged to provide spontaneous power reserves at all times – ideal for sporty driving with high demands. Finally, Qualify mode mobilizes the full system power: the electric motor delivers up to 180 PS from 6000 rpm in the “Extra Boost” range, which enables maximum performance for demanding routes and dynamic driving.

The striking racing look
The design language of the Ferrari 296 Speciale is strongly influenced by Ferrari's closed-wheel racing models and incorporates the brand's technical expertise, transforming it into a strikingly shaped body. Close cooperation between the Ferrari Styling Center and the engineering departments has resulted in a form-function synergy in which every design decision is also based on aerodynamic or thermal considerations. The front section is defined by a sculpted hood with a dynamic interplay of concave and convex surfaces. Typical of Ferrari special models, the three symmetrically arranged louvres adorn the hood and underline the vehicle's motorsport aspirations. At the rear, newly designed, outwardly offset winglets provide an even stronger racing car look. The more compact rear surface in body color conveys visual lightness and reduces the perceived mass of the vehicle. A specially developed five-spoke forged wheel design (inspired by the carbon wheels of the F80) completes the layout. The interior of the Ferrari 296 Speciale also follows a clearly racing-oriented design philosophy. The look is deliberately minimalist and functional, using materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum and Alcantara to save weight and emphasize sportiness. The raised center console with integrated controls forms the functional center of the cockpit. Visible screw fittings set striking design accents and reinforce the impression of a purist racing car. The 296 Speciale also sets special accents in terms of paintwork and individualization. The new exterior color “Verde Nürburgring” (an intense shade of green) emphasizes the dynamics of the vehicle. The appearance is complemented by a new livery with one or two continuous vertical stripes, also available in white for the first time. For an even more personal touch, customers can freely choose their preferred starting number between 00 and 99.
