Defender Dakar: The New Road-Legal 4x4 Inspired by the Dakar Winner

With the Defender Dakar, Land Rover takes the concept of high-performance 4x4s to a new level. Revealed as a Design Preview Model at The Quail by The Peninsula during Monterey Car Week in California, this exclusive model is directly derived from the Defender D7X-R, which claimed victory in the 2026 Dakar Rally on its competitive debut. The Defender Dakar is a road-legal evolution of the competition vehicle, combining more than 75 years of Defender off-road expertise with technologies developed for extreme motorsport. Its specification includes a wider track, increased ride height, rally-inspired suspension and extensive body adaptations designed to tackle the most demanding terrain. Its connection to the Dakar Rally goes far beyond styling. On its debut in 2026, the three Defender D7X-R competition cars entered in the new Stock category finished first, second and fourth. They also achieved a 1-2-3 result on ten of the thirteen demanding stages. Together, the three vehicles covered approximately 24,000 km under the extreme conditions of the rally.

Under its imposing bodywork, the Defender Dakar retains the D7X body architecture, transmission and driveline of the D7X-R competition car, all of which are based on the Defender OCTA. It also uses the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, but without the restrictions imposed by racing regulations. The road-legal Defender Dakar therefore delivers a full 635 PS and 750 Nm of torque. Its chassis specification is equally focused on extreme off-road performance. The Defender Dakar features a 35-inch tyre package mounted on new forged 20-inch wheels, coil-sprung suspension and Bilstein Advanced Dampers proven in motorsport. New Dunes and Gravel drive modes allow the vehicle to adapt to different surfaces, while the Airborne Detection system, originally developed for the competition car, helps manage landings after jumps across challenging terrain. The exterior design leaves no doubt about the Defender Dakar’s rally heritage. The Defender Dakar 2027 features roof-mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof, raised carbon-fibre air intakes, a carbon-fibre bonnet, extended wheel arches with exposed rivets and dedicated mud flaps. An enhanced metal front undershield and additional underbody protection complete its motorsport-inspired specification.

Inside, the Defender Dakar continues its transformation into a genuine road-legal rally-inspired 4x4. The limited-run model features a 2+2 seating configuration, with specially designed race seats for the front occupants. Optional four-point racing harnesses are available, while dedicated rear storage has been designed to accommodate racing helmets. The loadspace also features specially engineered mounting solutions for the spare wheel and air compressor. The exterior colour palette is led by the signature Dakar Sand and Yanbu Turquoise combination, directly inspired by the livery of the Dakar-winning D7X-R. Additional options include Narvik Black and Alaska White, with an optional Matte Protective Film available. The Defender Dakar will be produced as an exclusive limited-run model and is expected to become available for reservation from early 2027. Registrations of interest are already being collected, while further technical details and full specifications will be revealed at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. With this model, Defender brings the experience gained in one of the world's most demanding off-road competitions directly to the road, creating an exceptionally capable and distinctive 4x4.
