A NEW ERA OF PROTOTYPE RACING: MCL-HY TAKES AIM AT LE MANS
McLaren’s unveiling of the MCL-HY marks a decisive return to the pinnacle of endurance racing, as the brand prepares to re-enter the FIA World Endurance Championship Hypercar class in 2027. Developed under LMDh regulations, the new prototype is not merely a competitive machine, but a strategic statement of intent: a direct challenge for overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and a renewed pursuit of motorsport’s coveted Triple Crown. The MCL-HY will undergo an intensive 2026 test programme before homologation, laying the foundation for McLaren’s most ambitious sports car racing campaign in decades. Presented in a striking test livery inspired by the McLaren M6A, the car deliberately echoes the lineage of Bruce McLaren’s early endurance aspirations and the brand’s defining victories across Can-Am dominance and the legendary 1995 Le Mans win with the McLaren F1 GTR. Underpinned by a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis and hybridised V6 powertrain, the MCL-HY combines engineering precision with endurance-focused efficiency. Delivering up to 520 kW (707 PS) to the rear axle, the system is calibrated for both outright speed and the relentless demands of 24-hour competition, balancing performance with mechanical resilience at the highest level of global prototype racing.

PERFORMANCE, EFFICIENCY AND CONTROL
At its core, the MCL-HY embodies McLaren’s philosophy of lightweight performance engineering. The twin-turbocharged V6 hybrid system is integrated with an MGU unit to deliver immediate response and sustained power delivery, while the minimum weight of 1,030 kg ensures a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio within the Hypercar field. Developed jointly by McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive, the programme reflects a rare convergence of Formula 1-derived aerodynamics and road-car design intelligence. This collaboration enables a tightly optimised aerodynamic profile, engineered for stability at high speed, consistent tyre management, and efficiency over extreme race distances. The 2026 test programme will serve as a critical validation phase, not only for the race car itself but also for its closely related customer track derivative. McLaren’s driver development structure will support the programme with a blend of factory experience and emerging talent, ensuring continuous refinement ahead of the 2027 WEC debut.

ENDURANCE – THE MCL-HY GTR AND ULTRA-EXCLUSIVE OWNERSHIP
Alongside the race programme, McLaren introduces the MCL-HY GTR, a track-only evolution developed in parallel under the umbrella of Project: Endurance. This model represents a purist interpretation of Hypercar performance, deliberately stripped of the FIA-mandated hybrid system and powered solely by a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged racing V6. The result is a lighter, more direct machine producing approximately 730 PS, engineered to deliver an uncompromised analogue racing experience within a modern endurance prototype framework. By removing hybrid complexity, McLaren shifts the focus toward immediacy, driver connection, and mechanical purity, while simultaneously simplifying the ownership and operational model. Project: Endurance extends far beyond vehicle ownership. Clients are granted unprecedented access to McLaren’s World Endurance Championship ecosystem, including immersive participation in the team’s development journey through to the 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans. This is complemented by a curated, two-year global track programme spanning six international circuits, complete with professional coaching, race engineering support, and dedicated pit crews in a fully supported arrive-and-drive format.

FROM HERITAGE TO HYPERCAR FUTURE
The MCL-HY project is deeply rooted in McLaren’s racing DNA, drawing a continuous line from its Can-Am dominance through to its modern Formula 1 leadership and historic endurance triumphs. The return to Le Mans is not framed as nostalgia, but as a recalibration of intent—an effort to reassert McLaren among the defining forces of global prototype racing. By pairing a factory Hypercar programme with an ultra-exclusive customer track initiative, McLaren is effectively extending the endurance racing experience beyond the grid. The MCL-HY GTR ensures that the performance philosophy of the race car is not confined to competition alone, but translated into a tangible, private-world driving experience for a select group of clients. Deliveries of the MCL-HY GTR are scheduled to begin at the end of 2027, marking the final step in a programme designed not only to return McLaren to Le Mans, but to redefine how endurance racing is experienced, owned, and understood.
