The McLaren GTS: Design at the Service of Performance

Published 19 December 2023

McLaren bids farewell to the GT, making way for the GTS model in the brand's supercar lineup. A dynamic car for an unparalleled driving experience. McLaren fans can rejoice at the release of the new GTS, taking over the GT's spot in the supercar range. A car that embodies all the brand's hallmarks, combining beautiful and functional design, impressive power, and an advanced focus on mechanics to achieve unmatched lightness. These features serve as a dynamic and versatile vehicle, equally adept at sporting challenges as it is at everyday driving, highlighting comfort and elegance. "The new McLaren GTS offers an unmatched blend of McLaren's dynamic performance, refinement, and practicality. If you want to experience true supercar driving, the GTS allows it; if you wish to relax on a long journey or carry your luggage for a weekend, the GTS will be your ideal companion. It's a car true to McLaren's sporting DNA, but with a wide range of capabilities," Michael Leiters, CEO of McLaren Automotive, presented to the press.

An Aerodynamic Silhouette

Recognized worldwide for its design that blends beauty with functionality, the new McLaren GTS remains true to the brand's DNA by offering a model with elegant lines that enhance the performance of the supercar. Indeed, the design is conceived from the outset with aerodynamics in mind, with the lines and shapes of its bodywork bringing unparalleled dynamism to the car. In its overall appearance, we find the hallmarks of the GT, but here they are even more pronounced, especially with the front of the vehicle adopting the "hammerhead" look with a contemporary twist thanks to the new lowered front bumper. Thought out in every detail, the design stands out in the sculptural air intakes, adding a certain aggressiveness to the look of the GTS while serving its performance. Indeed, this design allows for easier channeling of air towards the radiator. The rear is also redesigned, notably with the wings equipped with larger and higher scoops. A stylistic contribution that once again improved the supercar's aerodynamics through the enhanced airflow. This decidedly muscular character is reinforced by the large rear diffuser and the dual-exit exhaust, available in a sports version for an even more intense driving sensation. If the new face of the GTS is assertive, it can be further enhanced by adding glossy carbon fiber finishes to the air intake blades and scoops. This option also includes what the brand calls a "carbon pack" encompassing everything under the bodywork, namely the side skirts, the lower parts of the front and rear bumpers, the front splitter, and the diffuser. The black finish on the standard model further highlights the car's lines with accents on the mirrors, the exhaust terminal, and around each of the windows. While we find McLaren's palette of body colors, it is expanded by the addition of three shades: Mantis Green, Tanzanite Blue, and Ice White. But for this exceptional model, another specially designed color emerges: Lava Grey. A metallic grey speckled with red that plays with the light on the bodywork, giving a new depth to the elegant grey of Lava Grey. A silhouette with a redesigned style, where each design detail enhances the driving quality of the McLaren.

Carbon Fiber, the Key to Lightness

Carbon fiber plays a central role in the GTS. While carbon is found in the exterior finishes to serve a heightened design, it is also extensively used in the vehicle's construction itself. Chosen for its lightness and rigidity, carbon fiber makes up the entirety of the MonoCell II-T central-engine monocoque chassis. A solid and lightweight base whose material echoes the roof, also made of recycled carbon fibers. This material, used in these central elements of the vehicle's design, drastically reduces the weight of the GTS, making it ultra-light and offering the driver a driving experience that McLaren describes as "thrilling" and free from sensory nuisances. Its total weight? 1520 kilograms, making it the lightest car in its category! The pursuit of lightness desired by the brand's automotive engineers then allows this new model to gain in performance, as the McLaren teams explain, "The power of the 4.0-liter M840TE twin-turbo V8 engine has been increased to 635 hp at 7,500 rpm, with the additional 15 hp coming from an increase in torque at the crankshaft made possible by more aggressive combustion phasing and revised ignition timing. Launch Control is standard; when activated, the GTS goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in just 8.9 seconds. The GTS's top speed is 326 km/h.”

The Supercar Experience

At the heart of McLaren's new project is a desire: to provide its drivers with a supercar experience in a versatile model. Whether for a weekend, a city outing, or a more sporty experience, the GTS adapts to everyone's desires with its driving that combines dynamism and fluidity. This quality is made possible thanks to its seven-speed SSG transmission, which facilitates smoother and faster gear changes. This is enhanced by the "comfort" mode activated from the start, making acceleration smooth. But characterized by its adaptability to all terrains and driving styles, it is also equipped with two other modes: Sport and Track. The former introduces a momentary ignition cut for faster gear changes, making the drive more aggressive and spectacular. The latter, Track mode, promises even more unforgettable sensations: "Track mode goes even further, maximizing transmission performance with minimal torque loss between gear changes. It's possible to manually change gears using the shift paddles on the steering wheel, regardless of the driving mode," stated the brand's teams. A sporting experience secured by adaptive dampening suspensions and a carbon-ceramic braking system and heightened by comfort worthy of the most luxurious cars. Indeed, while the interior design of the cockpit is impeccable in its appearance and style, where carbon elements are found again, it's also the Comfort seats that offer supercar-worthy sensations. Made of Nappa leather, they provide an ideal sitting position to fully experience the sensations promised by McLaren's GTS. A large and legible digital screen provides all the driving data for a successful outing, no matter the destination.
