Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S and GLS 63: The V8 Icons Enter a New Era

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled extensively updated versions of the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+, reinforcing the position of its largest performance SUVs in an automotive landscape increasingly focused on electrification. While many manufacturers continue to downsize their engines, AMG remains committed to one of its most iconic assets – the handcrafted V8. At the heart of both models is the latest evolution of the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, now known as the M177 EVO. Delivering 612 hp and 850 Nm of torque, the revised powerplant has been extensively re-engineered to meet future emissions requirements while preserving the emotional character and performance that customers expect from AMG. A new flat-plane crankshaft, optimized intake and exhaust systems, revised fuel injection technology and a sophisticated exhaust aftertreatment system ensure improved responsiveness, efficiency and compliance with global regulations. Supported by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system featuring an Integrated Starter Generator, the powertrain gains an additional 23 hp and 205 Nm when required, enhancing both performance and efficiency. Despite the technical revisions, acceleration remains breathtaking, with the GLE 63 S reaching 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and the larger GLS 63 S completing the same sprint in 4.2 seconds before both continue towards a top speed of 280 km/h.

The visual updates are immediately noticeable and give both SUVs a more assertive and contemporary appearance. Mercedes-AMG has redesigned the front section with a larger AMG-specific radiator grille, more aggressive air intakes and a new LED lighting signature that creates a stronger visual identity. The revised front fascia not only improves cooling for the powerful V8 engine but also enhances the vehicles’ road presence. At the rear, the new AMG Performance exhaust system is highlighted by distinctive twin tailpipes and a more pronounced diffuser design that emphasizes the sporting credentials of both models. The performance-oriented styling is complemented by an expanded wheel selection, allowing customers to choose from various AMG light-alloy and forged wheel designs. The GLE 63 S can be specified with wheels up to 22 inches in diameter, while the larger GLS 63 S offers options up to 23 inches. These combinations allow owners to tailor the appearance of their SUV according to personal preference, whether they favour understated elegance or a more dramatic performance-inspired look. The newly developed AMG Performance exhaust system also contributes to the overall experience, providing an adaptable soundtrack that ranges from refined and discreet in Comfort mode to a far more emotional and aggressive character in Sport+.

Inside, the updated GLE 63 S and GLS 63 S continue to combine luxury, craftsmanship and technology in a manner expected from the AMG flagship SUV range. The cabin welcomes occupants with premium materials, advanced digital interfaces and a distinctly performance-oriented atmosphere. The latest AMG Performance steering wheel is available in several finishes including Nappa leather, MICROCUT microfiber and carbon fibre, while integrated AMG controls allow drivers to adjust key vehicle settings without taking their hands off the wheel. Customers can choose from a wide selection of upholstery options, ranging from classic black Nappa leather to more distinctive MANUFAKTUR finishes in yacht blue, tartufo brown and carmine red. Carbon fibre and aluminium trim pieces further reinforce the sporty character, while the MICROCUT microfiber headliner adds a sense of exclusivity. Technology also takes a significant step forward thanks to Mercedes-Benz’s latest MB.OS operating system. High-resolution displays provide access to a wealth of AMG-specific information including torque distribution, G-forces, powertrain data and performance metrics. The system combines intuitive operation with impressive graphics, ensuring that drivers remain connected to the vehicle’s capabilities at all times. The result is an interior environment that feels equally suited to long-distance luxury travel and spirited driving.
