After launching several models in hybrid versions in recent years, the German brand continues to develop its range of models powered by electric energy. In March 2024, it announced the launch of the plug-in hybrid version of one of its iconic cars: the Mercedes Class E, which becomes the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+.

A new Mercedes in the hybrid market
The German brand continues its innovations in the field of plug-in hybrid vehicles, offering its loyal clientele the opportunity to find in more sustainable and ecological models all the advantages of Mercedes. For several years now, the automobile designer has been developing increasingly high-performance technologies based on three axes: intelligent efficiency and reduced consumption; comfortable driving dynamics; high autonomy made possible by intelligent drive management. The success encountered by the hybrid models launched in recent years encourages the brand to continue the implementation of plug-in hybrid engines in their iconic vehicles. In March 2024, the Class E was unveiled, in sedan and station wagon versions. "The Class E has been one of our most popular models for decades, and we want to continue in this direction with the new E 53 HYBRID. The vehicle offers a typical AMG driving pleasure, with excellent responsiveness, great driving dynamics, and a sporty design. As a plug-in hybrid, the E 53 HYBRID combines performance and efficiency. Thanks to its high autonomy, many daily trips can be made in purely electric mode. At the same time, the vehicle is equipped with a piece of full standard equipment, including a fully variable all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering. We thus offer our customers a vehicle that perfectly meets their high demands," commented Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and head of the Mercedes-Benz Class G and Mercedes-Maybach business units.

When electric doesn't sacrifice power: the engine of the new Class E
As innovations multiply in the world of hybrid cars, Mercedes once again demonstrates that this sustainable option has nothing to envy in gasoline engines in terms of performance and power. The plug-in hybrid engine offered on the two new Class E models generates a maximum power of 430 kW or 585 horsepower. This power is made possible by the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, complemented by the permanent magnet synchronous motor. The speed peak is 280 kilometers per hour, with an electric motor supporting the vehicle's consumption up to 140 kilometers per hour, allowing for thrilling sensations while remaining sustainable. The Mercedes teams explained to the press the specifics of this engine and its capabilities: "The 120 kW electric motor is integrated into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission to save space. The high power density of the hybrid power unit is achieved through the technology of the internal rotor synchronous with permanent excitation. The maximum torque of 480 Nm from the electric motor is available from the first turn and ensures great agility, even from a standstill. The 400-volt traction battery has a gross capacity of 28.6 kWh and is installed at the rear, under the trunk floor. The usable daily energy content is lower (21.22 kWh), as part of the energy is always reserved for boosting and thus for high-performance driving. Nevertheless, the high-voltage battery allows for an electric range of more than 100 kilometers." Regarding the charging mode, an 11kW power charger is provided onboard the vehicle for easy charging on alternating current. To accelerate the process, a 60kW fast charger suitable for direct current can be chosen as an option, allowing a charge from 10% to 80% in just twenty minutes. Finally, Mercedes technology also optimizes charging through the recovery system adapting to the driving situation.

The design of the new hybrid
While the German brand positions its new Class E in the lineage of its previous gasoline models, Mercedes designers have decided to incorporate some differential elements into this hybrid model. It's a discreet way to mark the difference and highlight the vehicle's sustainable character. These choices are found in many elements, starting with the design of the AMG-specific vertical slat radiator trim, which is illuminated as standard. The look of the front of the two models is also modified by an increase in the width of its wings, plus 11 millimeters on each side, which offers an increase in the track width on the front axle. As for the air intakes, they now feature two vertical fins, complemented by a central A-shaped element. For the side view, the choice of a smooth design gives the models a distinctive profile. "The side view is characterized by flowing modeled surfaces, without bulges or edges, up to the recessed door handles. The AMG-specific side skirts visually connect the two-wheel arches. The alloy wheels, which almost flush with the body, underline the power and dynamism. The flat LED taillights, connected horizontally and featuring a clear and striking graphic in the stylized star signature of Mercedes, are precisely integrated into the powerful rear. This arrangement structures the vehicle and emphasizes its overall width. The finishing touch is provided by the AMG spoiler on the trunk lid (sedan) and the AMG rear apron with diffuser and two round double exhaust outlets on the left and right." complete the design teams. Finally, there is also the presence of specific badges for Mercedes hybrids on the front and rear wings. AMG offers a variety of driving programs, catering to the different needs of its users. Among these, we find the brand's iconic programs, such as Comfort, Sport+, Smoothness, and Individual. However, on the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+, we find a new package: the AMG Dynamic Plus Package. This package goes beyond the driving experience. It indeed focuses on work that affects both technical and aesthetic characteristics. Among the most interesting elements of this package, we start with the AMG Performance steering wheel in Napa leather, which is equipped with numerous controls to easily access the model's various functionalities. On the safety side, the high-performance composite braking system is more significant at the front of this package and is characterized by a visual identity marked by red-painted brake calipers that further emphasize the sporty character. Still, on the technical side, the electronically controlled rear axle locking differential provides increased traction when exiting corners, ensuring great stability and optimal load distribution that prevents any power loss. Finally, the RACE START function focuses on performance at the start, "The RACE START function enables optimal sprinting from a standstill. In RACE START mode, the drive technology does everything possible to achieve the best possible acceleration. To do this, the software exploits the full power of the electric motor (120 kW) and the combustion engine (330 kW) as well as the maximum torque in each case." the brand explains.
