Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung: When Engineers Dream Without Limits

Published 10 September 2026

An Idea That Became a Car

Not every great vehicle begins with a product brief. The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung began with a question asked within AMG's engineering team in Affalterbach: how far can a CLE be taken toward maximum driving dynamics if every constraint is removed except the one that matters? A small group built a prototype to find out. What followed was not a conventional special edition but a comprehensive rebuild, a complete performance system conceived, engineered and hand-assembled at AMG's headquarters, limited to exactly 30 examples worldwide, and sold out before its world premiere was reached. The name Spezialanfertigung, special manufacture, is not a marketing designation but an accurate description of what each car required: an entirely rebuilt bodyshell, an extensively enhanced engine, a purpose-developed chassis, and a systematic reduction of approximately 170 kilograms compared with the donor vehicle. The result is the second model in the Mercedes-Benz Mythos Series, the programme dedicated to exceptionally rare collector vehicles produced in strictly limited numbers, following the windscreen-free AMG PureSpeed, and the clearest possible expression of what AMG means when it describes itself as built by hand, one at a time, in Affalterbach.

646 hp, Rear-Wheel Drive and the Decision That Changes Everything

At the heart of the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is the extensively modified AMG M177 EVO 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, its output of 646 hp and 850 Nm of torque reflected in the model designation itself. The flat-plane crankshaft reduces rotating masses, improves revving characteristics and sharpens throttle response, supported by dedicated engine mapping and three separate cooling circuits, a high-temperature circuit for the engine and two low-temperature circuits managing charge-air and transmission-oil cooling as well as the 48-volt components, each specifically enhanced for the demands of intensive racetrack use at very high ambient temperatures. The Akrapovič-developed exhaust cold-end, manufactured extensively in titanium for both sound quality and weight saving, completes a powertrain whose character is as deliberately engineered as its output. The more fundamental decision, however, is the one made about which wheels receive that power. The AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system of the donor vehicle has been removed entirely, replaced by pure rear-wheel drive through an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. The dynamic character this produces, combined with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission's emotional double-declutch function and nine-stage AMG TRACTION CONTROL that allows wheel slip to be preselected individually for circuit use, defines the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung's entire purpose. From rest to 200 km/h takes 11.4 seconds. Top speed is 310 km/h. On a circuit, with the front diffuser manually extended from Street to Race position and the rear wing adjusted for maximum rear-axle downforce, the car generates well over 250 kilograms of total downforce at top speed.

60mm Wider, 170kg Lighter and Built in Carbon

The body of the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung was comprehensively rebuilt rather than modified. The bodyshell has been reinforced and widened by 60 millimetres at both front and rear, accommodating AMG Performance forged wheels measuring 11.0J x 20 front and 12.0J x 20 rear, shod with 305/30 ZR20 and 335/30 ZR20 tyres developed from technology originally created for the Mercedes-AMG ONE. Carbon fibre replaces the standard material for the widened front fenders with integrated air outlets, the front apron with large cooling intakes, the side sill panels, the bonnet with central cold-air intake, the roof, the rear apron with diffuser, the boot lid and the manually adjustable rear wing on its two trapezoidal supports. The rear side windows and rear window are polycarbonate. An integrated roll-over bar increases bodyshell torsional rigidity. The car sits 22 millimetres lower at the front axle and 16 millimetres at the rear. The suspension was developed jointly by Mercedes-AMG and KW automotive, a steel coilover system with four-way adjustable damper technology featuring independently configurable low-speed and high-speed rebound and compression settings, allowing the chassis to be tuned precisely for driving style, circuit characteristics and surface conditions simultaneously rather than as a series of compromises. AMG Ceramic High-Performance Composite brakes pair 420 x 40mm internally ventilated and perforated ceramic discs with six-piston fixed calipers at the front and 360 x 32mm discs with single-piston floating calipers at the rear, their gold-painted finish the only visual concession to anything other than pure performance function.

A Cabin Stripped to Its Purpose

Inside, the 646 Spezialanfertigung follows the same logic as the engineering programme that produced it: remove what is not necessary, retain what serves the drive. The rear seats and acoustic insulation have been deleted. Comfort features and assistance systems have been reduced. The number of controls on the AMG Performance steering wheel, covered in DINAMICA microfiber with a motorsport-inspired flattened rim, has been reduced alongside them. Ultra-lightweight racing bucket seats with pronounced lateral support are standard, with six-point harnesses available as part of the optional Performance Package. Lightweight carbon-fibre door panels complete an interior that makes no apology for what it has removed, because what it retains is precisely the point. The finish that ties the exterior together is as considered as everything beneath it: Mojave Silver Magno covers the front section, Obsidian Black Magno extends from the B-pillar rearward, the two tones meeting at the precise point where the wide-body's visual weight is greatest. AMG crests on both doors acknowledge the provenance of the car without overstating it. Thirty examples, each hand-built in Affalterbach, each already spoken for, a collector's car whose desirability was established not by its scarcity alone but by the clarity of the engineering vision behind it. Highly rational engineers, as AMG's chairman notes, dreamed of a highly irrational car. The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is the proof that they succeeded.
