Audi Q9: A New Definition of Luxury Begins from Within

With the upcoming debut of the Audi Q9, Audi is making a decisive statement about the future of luxury mobility. While flagship SUVs have traditionally competed through power outputs and exterior presence, the new Q9 shifts the focus inward, toward atmosphere, comfort and the emotional experience of travelling. Described by Audi CEO Gernot Döllner as a new interpretation of “Vorsprung durch Technik,” the Q9 introduces a philosophy where innovation is increasingly measured not only by engineering, but by the quality of life inside the cabin itself. And judging by Audi’s first official preview, this flagship SUV aims to become less of a vehicle and more of a refined mobile sanctuary. Positioned above the current Q7 and Q8, the Q9 enters the ultra-competitive full-size luxury SUV segment with an unmistakably premium mission. Spaciousness, effortless usability and digital sophistication define the experience from the very first interaction, beginning with electrically powered doors that open at the touch of a button.

The defining quality of the Q9 is not aggression or sportiness, but generosity. Audi has engineered its largest SUV around the concept of space as luxury, creating an interior that prioritises openness, flexibility and serenity above all else. Customers will be able to choose between six- and seven-seat configurations, with the optional six-seat layout transforming the second row into a business-class lounge environment. Two electrically adjustable individual seats offer ventilation integrated directly into both the cushion and backrest centre panels, a detail more commonly associated with private aviation than conventional SUVs. For families, practicality remains central to the concept. The seven-seat version allows all three second-row seats to accommodate child seats, while electrically folding third-row backrests enable rapid transitions between passenger and cargo space. Even the standard seating specification includes partial electric adjustment throughout the cabin, reinforcing the Q9’s effortless character. The front seats continue the lounge-inspired philosophy with massage functionality, ventilation and Audi’s latest sports seat plus design. Combined with the expansive cabin proportions, the effect is one of calm sophistication rather than traditional SUV ruggedness. Audi’s ambition is clear: the Q9 is designed to rival premium executive lounges as much as competing luxury vehicles.

One of the most compelling aspects of the Q9 is the way technology has been integrated almost invisibly into the experience. Rather than overwhelming occupants with theatrical digital interfaces, Audi focuses on seamless interaction and quiet convenience. The fully automatic doors are perhaps the best example. For the first time in an Audi production model, all four doors can be electrically opened and closed using the key, the myAudi app, the MMI interface, the brake pedal or even the seatbelt buckle. Wide opening angles make access effortless in tight urban environments, while intelligent surround sensors prevent collisions with nearby obstacles, cyclists or passing traffic. Above the cabin sits one of the segment’s most sophisticated panoramic roofs. Measuring approximately 1.5 square metres, the expansive glass panel can switch between transparent and opaque states through nine individually controllable sections integrated into the laminated glass itself. Conventional sunshades are no longer required, allowing the roof to maintain a cleaner architectural appearance. Audi has also transformed ambient lighting into a core part of the experience. An 84-LED illumination system integrated into the panoramic roof can project one of 30 colours across the cabin, synchronised with the wider ambient lighting themes. Combined with the dynamic Interaction Light strip running across the dashboard, the Q9 introduces a far more emotional interpretation of interior technology. Perhaps most impressive is how these systems work together with the upgraded Bang & Olufsen 4D sound system. The lighting reacts dynamically to music, while seat-integrated actuators physically transmit bass frequencies into the seats themselves, creating a sensory experience that extends beyond traditional audio reproduction. In the Q9, luxury is no longer only visual, it becomes tactile and immersive.

Despite its focus on exclusivity, the Q9 has clearly been designed with everyday usability in mind. Audi’s attention to practical detail is evident throughout the cabin, from the redesigned centre console to the extensive storage solutions integrated across all three rows. The wireless charging system supports simultaneous fast charging for two smartphones via Qi2.2 technology, while USB-C ports offering up to 100 watts allow laptops and larger devices to charge at full speed during travel. In the luggage compartment, Audi introduces a clever aluminium rail system with adjustable anchors and sliding hooks, enabling cargo to be secured in three dimensions without sacrificing floor space. Material selection also plays a major role in shaping the Q9’s identity. Audi expands its interior palette with sophisticated new finishes including alpaca wool blends, Dinamica microfiber, fine Nappa leather and open-pore wood trims. Colours such as tamarind brown and stone beige reinforce the warm, residential atmosphere Audi is targeting, while matte and textured surfaces reduce fingerprints and visual clutter. The result is an interior that feels intentionally calm, a contrast to the increasingly overstimulated approach often seen elsewhere in the luxury segment. With the Q9, Audi appears determined to redefine what its flagship SUV should represent. Rather than chasing outright extravagance, the brand is pursuing something more refined: a luxury experience centred on comfort, atmosphere and intelligent simplicity. And if this first glimpse is any indication, the Q9 may become one of the most sophisticated interpretations of modern automotive luxury yet.
