A Vision Beyond Convention
With Project Nightingale, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars enters a new realm of bespoke craftsmanship, unveiling the first chapter of its Coachbuild Collection. Conceived as an open two-seat motor car, this extraordinary creation represents a bold convergence of three elements never before united within the marque: the artistic freedom of coachbuilding, a fully electric drivetrain, and a profoundly serene open-air driving experience. Named after “Le Rossignol”, the house of designers and engineers at Henry Royce’s Riviera estate, Project Nightingale carries both poetic and historical significance. Limited to just 100 examples worldwide and available strictly by invitation, it is designed for a rarefied clientele: individuals who regard the motor car not merely as transport, but as a deeply personal expression of taste and identity. With deliveries commencing in 2028, this is not simply a vehicle, but a multi-year creative journey shared between client and marque.

Streamlined Form, Timeless Inspiration
At its core, Project Nightingale is a study in disciplined design. Drawing inspiration from the Streamline Moderne movement and the experimental ‘EX’ Rolls-Royce models of the late 1920s, particularly the legendary 16EX and 17EX, it embraces purity of form over ornamentation. The result is a sheer, monolithic aesthetic that feels both archival and entirely contemporary. Measuring 5.76 metres in length, the car’s proportions are dramatic. A commanding Pantheon grille, nearly a metre wide, anchors the front, appearing as though carved from a single block of stainless steel. From this upright gesture, the body flows seamlessly rearwards in a single, uninterrupted hull line, echoing the elegance of a yacht slicing through water. Key design principles define its presence. The “central fuselage” creates a continuous, torpedo-like form, while “flying wings” introduce sculptural tension across the surfaces. Slender vertical headlamps and polished stainless-steel bands accentuate the car’s length, guiding the eye from front to rear. Even the 24-inch wheels, the largest ever fitted to a Rolls-Royce, are designed to evoke motion at rest, their forms inspired by the propellers of a yacht beneath the waterline.

Electric Silence, Open-Air Sensation
Beneath its sculptural exterior lies a fully electric architecture built on the marque’s proprietary aluminium spaceframe. This powertrain is not merely a technological choice, it is fundamental to the car’s character. With no combustion engine noise and minimal mechanical intrusion, Project Nightingale delivers an experience defined by near-total silence. This acoustic purity transforms open-top driving into something altogether new. With the roof lowered, the absence of engine noise allows the world itself to take centre stage, the rustle of wind through trees, the rhythm of waves, or the subtle chorus of birdsong. Rolls-Royce engineers liken the sensation to sailing: a seamless glide through the environment rather than a forceful engagement with it. Even with the roof raised, serenity remains paramount. A specially developed sound-insulating material, blending cashmere, advanced textiles, and composite layers, ensures a cocoon-like atmosphere. Yet, crucially, it preserves the delicate sounds that enrich the experience, such as rain falling softly against the fabric roof.

An Interior Defined by Atmosphere and Artistry
Inside, Project Nightingale becomes an immersive environment crafted for two. The defining feature is the “Starlight Breeze” suite, an intricate constellation of over 10,500 illuminated elements inspired by the soundwaves of nightingale song. Flowing across the cabin in a dynamic pattern, this ambient lighting transforms auditory inspiration into visual poetry, enveloping occupants in a celestial embrace. This illumination is housed within the sculptural “Horseshoe” structure, which rises behind the seats and frames the cabin in a protective, architectural gesture. Materials and forms are equally considered: saddle-inspired leather surfaces, a split central armrest, and finely machined aluminium details create a tactile richness that rewards close attention. Functionality is seamlessly integrated into this artistry. The Spirit of Ecstasy rotary controller emerges elegantly from beneath the armrest, its jewelled detailing reflecting the precision of haute horlogerie. Hidden compartments, bespoke luggage solutions, and meticulously curated controls, reduced to just five primary elements, underscore the philosophy of refined simplicity. Each of the 100 examples will be uniquely commissioned, with an entirely new palette of colours, materials, and bespoke features developed exclusively for Project Nightingale. From Riviera-inspired hues to hand-finished wood veneers, every detail is tailored to the client’s vision. In Project Nightingale, Rolls-Royce has not merely created a motor car, it has defined a new dimension of luxury. It is a synthesis of heritage and innovation, silence and sensation, sculpture and motion. Above all, it stands as a testament to what becomes possible when engineering, artistry, and imagination are allowed to move without constraint.
